Russna Kaur (b. 1991) is a painter based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Kaur is known for her paintings that rigorously explore color and form, investigating the materiality of the medium by playing with textures and surfaces. By combining colors, textures and panels Kaur's paintings marry multiple ideas and histories.
Kaur grew up in the Punjabi community and draws upon her experience in commercial textile and surface design. She cites her mother’s work as a Punjabi wedding dress designer as a key influence in her exploration of color, its symbolic significance, and its power to evoke.
“The bold and raucous colour combinations I use in paintings such as, All of the lights that shine, reference the spectacle of gatherings and locales such as amusement parks, community festivals, ceremonies, and religious spaces sites of overstimulation, observance, and illusion. Through an iterative process of exploration, I aim to investigate the complex role of colour within my Punjabi community. I believe colour is alive and vulnerable and serves as a marker of energy and joy, but can also act as a mask for intergenerational trauma. In my paintings and life, colour provides both an entry point and knowing distraction into a deeper set of meaning and representation.” --Russna Kaur
