Artist Statement 2007
One foot in the Old World, one in the New: that is the way I see my work and myself.
In the early years I splashed oil paint with abandon, much like the Abstract Expressionists of the time. I still like the freedom of that style, but when I could no longer tolerate the fumes, I began to paint with watercolor. At the same time, I was becoming an avid gardener; and because of a love affair with historical botanical illustration, I found myself trying to depict such nuances as the delicacy of a daffodil petal.
These styles represent two opposite extremes, two worlds. However, innovations in non-toxic solvents have allowed me to return to the medium I enjoyed as a student back in the 1960s; so today I am painting my favorite subject matter in oil once again.
In the new canvases I hope to portray the vitality and immediacy of each flower as imagined against a sky of wild brush strokes or perhaps within an ethereal Old World atmosphere. In addition, I am including some works in gouache on paper—my latest in an ongoing attempt to capture the character of flowers. In this case, the flowers are orchids.
