R Clint Colburn
Born in Calvert City, Kentucky in 1980, R. Clint Colburn has lived and worked in Lexington for more than two decades. Moving freely among painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, writing, and the sketchbook, Colburn approaches art-making intuitively, using it as a means of self-discovery and a way of examining the subconscious and the unknown. His work often accumulates through layering, revision, fragmentation, and reuse, allowing figures, symbols, text, and unexpected associations to build their own visual language. Colburn has exhibited and published work nationally and internationally, including a 2013 solo exhibition at Lexington's Institute 193, and reached a broad audience through his artwork for Cage the Elephant's acclaimed 2013 album Melophobia. His recent sketchbooks continue his longstanding investigation of the figure, memory, perception, and the strange territory between conscious thought and instinct.
