10 Questions with Carlos Gamez de Francisco

Outside of art, what hobbies do you have or how do you like to spend your free time?
I spend most of my day creating art—or thinking about it. I feel lucky that my passion is also my work, so it rarely feels like “working.” When I’m not painting, I love spending time with my family and our dogs, or traveling whenever I get the chance. Those moments recharge me and often inspire new ideas for future pieces.
What do you like to listen to while working in your studio?
I usually listen to audiobooks or podcasts while I paint—especially ones about history or classic literature. They keep my mind engaged while my hands are busy creating, and sometimes a story or idea becomes inspiration for a painting.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, I do! I have two Afghan Hounds—Keanu and Mia. They’re elegant, playful, and full of personality. They keep me company in the studio and are a big part of my daily life.
What is your favorite [book, movie, or television show]?
It’s hard to choose just one, but if I had to, I’d say Forrest Gump is the movie I’ve watched the most—over 40 times. After nearly ten years without seeing it, I watched it again recently and loved it just as much as the first time.
As for books, The Little Prince has been with me since childhood, and it’s the one I’ve revisited the most. Each time, I discover something new.
Do you believe in the power of manifestation?
Yes, I do. My life is a clear example of it. When I came to the U.S., I had no money, no connections, and I didn’t speak English—but I arrived with a dream of becoming a fine artist. Four months later, through faith, discipline, and daily hard work, that dream became my reality. I truly believe that with passion, dedication, and a clear vision, we can manifest the life we want.

What is your quirkiest hidden talent?
Once, I was able to paint while blindfolded and using both hands at the same time. It was the first time I tried it, and I was amazed by the results. I haven’t attempted it since, but I’d love to give it another try in the near future.
What is your favorite sport?
I love CrossFit. I practiced it for three years, and it quickly became a real passion. It challenges me both physically and mentally, and I enjoy the sense of progress and community it brings.
What is your favorite food/restaurant?
I really enjoy Japanese food, especially sushi and sashimi. I also love Spanish cuisine—visiting my family in Spain makes every meal feel like a special experience, even at a simple restaurant. And of course, I have a soft spot for Cuban food because of my roots.

What is something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t tried yet?
I’ve always wanted to run a marathon. It’s a huge mental and physical challenge, and I love pushing myself to take on new challenges.
Have you ever disliked something and then changed your mind?
Yes, I have. When I was in Cuba, there were many aspects of my culture I didn’t enjoy—I never liked cigars or traditional Cuban music. But after moving to the U.S., I found myself missing the very things I used to dislike, and now I truly appreciate them.
What is the best advice someone has ever given you?
When I was studying fine art, I wasn’t happy with one of my drawings and told my professor it wasn’t good because I had a cold and wasn’t feeling well. My professor told me, “Never make excuses. One day you’ll exhibit in a gallery or a museum, and the audience will come to see your painting—not to hear your excuses. Just give your best.” That advice has stayed with me ever since and continues to guide my work.
