Born in Myrtle Beach, SC and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Steven S. Walker received his BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University and his MFA at Marywood University. Steven has been pursuing his passion for creating art since having his drawing of Tonto published in his nursery school newsletter.

Steven began his professional art career as a freelance illustrator. As a freelance illustrator Steven has had the privilege of working with such clients as the Boy Scouts of America, Air Force Art Program, the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Colgate and Highlights for Children. His work has been accepted into the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and the Illustrators Club of DC, Maryland and Virginia. Most recently, in tandem with writer Jo Kittinger, he received the Crystal Kite Award from the Society of Children’s Book Writer’s and Illustrators for Rosa’s Bus.

With a desperate need to find his artistic voice, Steven began painting landscapes based on the scenes that he would see while on family road trips to Farmville, VA. It was the sky breaking through the passing trees, the herds of grazing cattle and the run down barns that caught his attention. The nostalgia of those trips would later encourage the young artist to document his surroundings as often as possible, whether it’s a weekend in the Blue Ridge Mountains or just a walk on a park trail. Since making the transition into the fine art world, Steven’s work has been well received by galleries, juried exhibitions and private collections, including the Central Ohio Plein Air Competition, the Richeson 75 Competition, the Booth Western Art Museum, Dominion Resources and the United States Air Force. He currently has a statewide traveling exhibition with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Steven currently resides in Hahira, GA, with his wife Evelyn and studio assistant/daughter Poppy, where you can find him neck deep in paint and inspiration.
